Europe is known for its beauty and diversity. Our continent may look like a small appendage of Asia on the world map, but when it comes to hiking, we are giants. Hiking seems to be in Europeans’ blood, as the continent is crisscrossed by a network of hiking trails, with new ones constantly being added.
There is something for every taste. Beginners try short, local trails to the nearest mountain or around the nearest lake. Those who want to go further might hike a section of the established Camino de Santiago or one of the better-known long-distance trails of their home country and abroad. And with increasing experience, more exciting routes come into play.
For those who find this too boring, they circle the highest mountain of the Alpes on the Tour du Mont Blanc (Pedestre), hike Norge på langs, or test their improvisation skills on less established trails in southeastern Europe. In general, new trails are rarely free of surprises. Even on the old ones, you might sometimes need pruning shears.
However, most hiking trails in Europe are maintained by a small army of dedicated enthusiasts, leaving you with only one problem: where to hike next.
Here, I have compiled a brief overview of the usual suspects among hiking countries.
